Studying In Canada

In my country of origin private education is somewhat affordable and most of the middle class can reach it. Of course, there’s a wide variety of private schools and prices. I had the chance of being educated in one of those. And also my eldest son stated his education in Argentina in a private school.

Most of the times, the education level is good. I suppose that private schools in Argentina grew just because the level of the public education system has been awfully bad in the last twenty something years.

A few days ago I found a pamphlet at the office’s cafeteria. It was from a private school in Kanata (that’s part of the City of Ottawa, around 25 kilometers from downtown). I got curious and decided to take a look at the website and find out the tuition fee.

Are you curious? Don’t look to the picture below and say a prize. Now scroll down. The screenshot was taken from Counterpoint Academy > Admissions > Tuition Fees.

Go buddy! This time’s for real!

Last week I let you know about the first week of school and how everyone did. I also told you about M starting Kinder and the first, short steps during this period.

Last week M had another day at school. This time he went alone (actually with F, in the same bus) and spent the whole 2 and a half hours there. Of course, mom and dad decided to go to school also and check his safe arrival and how he was going to react now being on his own. Well, actually he did very well. His brother F tokk his hand when they got off the bus, took him to the yard and introduced him to the French teacher (you should’ve seen such a lovely scene!) He stayed there, kind of lost at the beginning but the lady there was kind of supportive and knew when to take his hand. We like his French teacher! Also his brother F took sometime before class to go check for him. F was great! Very nice of him!

So now it’s for real…. This Tuesday M starts kinder and will be the beginning of his school life until he decides it’s enough. He will start learning the first steps not only to language, maths and arts but also towards how to deal with society out of home. He will start his official development as a city and formal member of the Canadian society.

Canada, there you are. This is M, let’s work together to make him a proud citizen. Martin, this is Canada, together we will try to make you a proud citizen of this country.

Good Luck M! And remember… this time it’s for real!

Oh Gosh! With three kids and having been in this “parent business” for long, I never thought a back to school week could be so hard and stressful!

We have three boys: M (4), starting Junior Kinder. F (8), starting grade 3. S (14), starting high school. For the three of them is, for one reason or another, a week of “New somethings”

M is new to everything: yellow bus and school. He’s so excited about this that he just wants to get in the bus every single morning… But not your time yet Little Boy! You have to go through the adaptation period first!

We’ve been with him at school for an hour last week. He had a great time, the kids are all adorable and the teacher seems to be a very nice lady. This week he will be going on his own in the bus. Let’s see!

F is new to the school. We changed him from the old school art our old neighborhood to the one that corresponds to our address. He’s still trying to fit but I’m confident he will make it. He’s a charismatic kind of guy. I hope his new teacher supports him enough and that he does not have any issues with the boys. Kids can be cruel sometimes!

S is new to High School. And also are we! We did not do our High School in North America so we are new to this system. Poor S! Every time he faces a new era, we also do with him. We try to give him our best support, but we are learning all this at the same time!

He’s also “kind of new” to the local transport system. Until last year he went to school and came back with the yellow buses. Starting this year, he will have to take OC Transpo. Terrible shock but necessary!

All the changes made all of us nervous: the kids and us. We want them to go through life with a minimum amount of stress, right? Well, that’s what we try. And we survived!

How was the first week of school for you? Let us know in the comments!

The Government of Alberta had a great idea and created a website to teach the Employers how to determine the equivalence of your degree in Canada.

The list of countries included are: India, Pakistan, Philippines, Great Britain and others.

For example, you can click on the following for Indian education Credentials.

If your plan is to come to Canada for a degree, your first chore is to choose a Canadian College or University that better fit your needs.

For that, you can use these fine on-line tools…

AUCC Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada

It has a great Programs of Study database to let you choose based on different criteria: language, Province, field of study, etc.

Their Canadian University International Exchange Agreements Database (CUE) lets you find out if your actual College or University in your country has some kind of agreement with a Canadian one… You never know if there could be a chance there, right?

It also has a link to a database with available jobs in Canadian universities that could be useful if you have a background on the area.

e!nfo. A guide to Ontario’s universities for secondary school students

Yes, I know! You are not a high school graduate! But this web page can be useful in two ways: if you want to pursue a university or College degree here, yo are in the same condition as a lo9cal High School graduate… almost! If you have a son or daughter around grade 12 age, this is the page to go also!

This short video show you how to use the site…
