Coming from South America you may have already guessed that my religion (if any) would be Roman Catholic.
Coming most of you from South East Asia and the Arab World, I can guess you may not be Roman Catholic or Jew.
Nevertheless, and despite what your religion is (who cares after all?), I wanted to share a thought I once had about Immigration as a form of Liberation or Resurrection.
I certainly think there’s something of that in this process of coming to another country. We look for a new life, we want to escape from whatever oppression we suffer now (in any sense, anuy kind of oppression). We look for a new start for us and for those close to us.
We sacrifice. We sacrifice our lives in some sense. We are giving up an old way of life and what we used to be to be someone new with a new life.
We come here with old wounds inflicted by others and ourselves. And many won’t believe us.
We will have to fight against new prejudices and those who don’t believe on us. We will have to face new sacrifices for a promise of a better land. The Promise Land.
Is Canada your Promised Land, your Mecca? If so, why?
We can call it a week (almost).
