Jobs In Canada for Foreigners

big-lie

During the past few weeks I’ve been doing some research on the Federal Skilled Trades Program. I was trying to find out how anyone abroad could apply to the Permanent Residence using this program and without a job offer.

Having a job offer from abroad for an electrician, plumber, welder and so on is not easy. Not at all. And most of the time, these trades are subject of scams by unscrupulous people promising what they don’t have and taking advantage of those looking for a brighter, better future.

I thought it was not going to be hard. Given that the Program says that you need a certificate of qualification in your skilled trade issued by a provincial or territorial body that CIC had done their homework and already set up something with said bodies. But not.

A few days ago I received an email from a reader.

It was not very different to many emails I receive daily from readers around the world.

He shared with me his expectations with Canada, what he came looking for and what he is finding now.

Sadly, expectations and reality in this case are very different. And I dare to say it may not be completely his fault.

Today I want to share with you (once more) how you can overcome the most used excuse by local employers then they do not know how to justify their decision of not hiring you.

I bet you asked yourself at least one of these questions when thinking about the Canadian Job Market.

I hope I can bring you at least part of the answer. Remember, you are a Top Performer. You tackled a great project coming to Canada. You don;t need me or anyone else to “feed spoon” you. You just need a kickstart.

What question do you want to add? May be I can help you find the answer…

Canada’s worst and best jobs.

Today I found a link to a report called “Canada’s best Jobs 2012″ published at CanadianBusiness.com, and I’d like to share it with you.

What this people did was to survey a list of hundreds of job usually tracked by Statistics Canada (the place to go if you want any statistic on this country).

They analyzed employees between 2006 and 2011, the change in salary between 2006 and 2011 and they took the median salary for 2011. Based on all that, they created two main rankings: Best Over $60K and Best Below $60K. They also created a few other interesting lists like a Top 10 (those with highest growth and best salaries), a Worst 10 (you got it: those with lowest growth and worst salaries) and the jobs with the best growth.

A couple of weeks ago I posted a conversation with Daisy Wright, Award Winning Career Coach and author of the Best Seller “No Canadian Experience, eh?”.

The audio was not good at all and I think that spoiled the intentions of many you to learn something from it.

I re-recorded the podcast with Daisy last week and posted it again.

Don’t miss it! Head back to the original post and listen to this very interesting episode to learn among other things:

  • What you should do when you are told you don;t have Canadian Experience
  • What you don’t have to do in your resume
  • Why you have to be B.A.D.
  • How to behave in a call interview
  • And much more.

Click here to listen to the podcast with Daisy Wright

Cheers!

When  I first came to Canada and started to look for a job there were at least three excuses I got to bounce at every interview: “Your French has too much accent”, “You don’t have a Security Clearance” and “You don’t have Canadian Experience”

The first one is obvious because I’m not French.

The second one was true and there’s nothing you can do about it.

But the third one is ridiculous. And what could you answer to that? “Of course I don’t have Canadian experience! I am a newcomer for God sake!”

This, also, has a solution. Today I’ll let you know how.
